A few recent pins...

Have I mentioned how much I LOVE Pinterest??? One of my boards is called 'Crafty Ideas' it is where I pin things I find that I think I could maybe perhaps attempt to make (hmm!) This board is super inspiring, I love looking through these pics and getting into a crafty mood.  I shall post evidence if I should ever get round to attempting any of these.  Here are the pin details...

  1. This pin is originally from http://www.onepearlbutton.com/2010/12/welcome-december-welcome-sponsors.html however I suspect that this is not the original source for the photo. (sorry!)
  2. HOW cute are these??? I suspect if I attempt these they will look nothing like this.  Will have to purchase instead... hehe. http://www.etsy.com/listing/76951356/bear-rug-coaster-set-of-four?ref=hp_tt_yt
  3. I do love baking cookies, and these might not actually be so difficult to make.  Might attempt next Valentine's Day. http://www.bakeat350.blogspot.co.uk/2012/02/double-decker-stripey-valentine-cookies.html
  4. I go crazy over buttons, so anything with buttons in/on I am instantly drawn to. These are amazing.  The original post is a tutorial, which is such a cool idea, check it out... http://www.lilblueboo.com/2012/03/cast-resin-paperweights-coasters-a-tutorial.html
  5. Another great idea with a super helpful tutorial, yeah, http://www.livingwithpunks.com/2011/06/sys-whimsical-key-chains.html these would make a perfect present and only use scraps!

Where I Work

As I have mentioned previously I just started a new job and so far I absolutely love it, it's so interesting.  But one of the main things I like is the location and my office.  The campus is lovely and green with lawns and trees and flowers all around. One whole wall is a window so it is so light and bright.  It is always important to me to have a nice working environment, it makes me happy when I have windows.  In a previous job I was stuck in a basement for 5 years with no sunlight so this office is such a treat.  I was all on my own the other day in the office so I took the opportunity to take some sneaky photos.  Yeah, ok, it might not be the most exciting looking office, but I'm so happy here.

Table Makeover

I am sooooo happy with what the postman brought today! I have been wanting a tablecloth for my Dining Room table for ages, and I recently found this perfect polka dot one online and it came today. It makes me happy when I get little presents from me!  Look at my quite boring table without tablecloth in the first picture compared to how amazing my table now looks with the polka dots.  Yeah it clashes with my button table mats but I like to think in a good way. Also some pretty daffodils to celebrate the amazing spring weather we have been having, everyone is so smiley :-)

Old Family Photos - Part 2

I thought I would share another few scanned old photos.  You can see Part 1 here. I love these so much, I love the tiny format, and I think my Grandma is holding kittens in about 90% of them! aw! The bottom photo is so creased because my Grandad used to keep it in his uniform pocket when he went to war, it has his name and army number on the back.  I love the textures and creases of the photos because they show character and tell a story.  It is funny how photo aps such as Instagram these days allow you to add old photo details and creases etc, but I can assure you these ones are authentic.  I hope you enjoyed seeing these. x

The week's nails...

For this week's nails I used the zigzag nails idea but put the sellotape long ways down the nail instead of across the nail.  I just thought that this would make a better effect as it's a longer part of the nail so get more of the zigzag detail.  I used my Models Own in Sophie's Pink as the base coat which was excellent for a base for zigzags.  It dries so fast and almost dries sort of matte and hard so didn't come off when I pulled the sellotape off.  The blue I used was Barry M in 291 Cobalt Blue.  I always finish off with a layer of clear varnish.

This week I have mostly...

  • Been starting my new job! I love it! I am now working for a university and I have a big huge desk right in the window of a lovely, light and bright room, it's so calming.  I am really going to love working there, it is a really interesting and inspiring environment.
  • Been planning Marky's birthday presents. I cooked meat for the first time ever (as far as I can remember anyway) as a surprise, I am a strict veggie, so this was not an easy task for me!

This week's nails...

This week's nails are orange with little black spot details.  The orange I used was Barry M in 301 Block Orange and a Barry M Black.  I also used a clear varnish over the top.  To do the spots I just loaded the brush end with just a little bit of black and carefully dotted with the end of the brush.  I'm not the biggest fan of orange as a colour but it looks really bright and as it's not a colour I wear often it's nice for a change.

Outdoor Adventures - Walk in Armathwaite

Saturday was such a nice sunny day! Probably the fist this year so far, felt very spring like and pretty.  Dad and Kara and I decided to go for a walk that we found in the local paper around Armathwaite, a pretty village in the Eden Valley, just to the East of Carlisle.  It is so nice round there and there are lots of pretty little villages to discover.  Was a very interesting walk, we got stuck in a herd of cows, had to walk on a track ankle deep in squelchy mud (Which I enjoyed actually in my wellies!) then we saw a farmer bringing out teeny tiny lambs from the shed into the field for the first time! So lovely to see, they were so skinny and wobbly on their feet. I love this time of year where all the fields are full of lambs, sooooo cute! At the end of the walk Daddy wanted to walk up to the little station in Armathwaite, he can't resist a pretty old fashioned little station and he was very happy to see the station buildings were beautifully kept.

Crafty Adventures - Heart Bookmark for my Mum

Yesterday was Mother's Day and I decided to make my mum a felt bookmark.  This was a really quick and easy project to make but I think really pretty and useful too!  Here's how to make it...
  • Draw a paper heart template, ensuring it has a right angle point so it fits onto the page corner.
  • Cut out two felt hearts using the template.
  • Decorate one heart with a design of your choice.  I sewed buttons and ricrac onto mine.  Be sure not to sew anything on that will stick out too much, it needs to lie relatively flat in your book.
  • Sew your hearts together, making sure you leave the top half open.  I used blanket stitch on mine.
That's all there is to it! Happy sewing!

This week I have mostly...

  • Been having my last week at work, and it was a bit stressy and emotional. Hasn't really sunk in yet that I have left. Had a good last day though, got lovely pressies and had a nice meal. Sad to leave everyone, but excited for something new.

Costa store
  • Been looking round at my new job. I had one day this week before I start properly next week. It seems really good, and everyone was nice.  But I have to admit the most exciting bit was finding out there is a mini Costa in the canteen! wuhu! Yummy hot chocolates every day (well more like attempting not to get hot chocs every day!) Pic from www.costa.co.uk

  • Been discovering the many many drool worthy dresses at www.oasis-stores.com, there are SO many I want. Can't wait until payday! However I am getting slightly nervous about the nicer weather, I may have to give up my black opaques soon, eeek! Pic from www.oasis-stores.com
  • Been spending a lovely weekend mostly outside.  First a brilliant, pretty walk with Dad and Kara (check back tomorrow for a full post about the walk) and then this morning a great bike ride with Dad round an old familiar route, but also a very favourite with lots of hills to woosh down.  It's nice that the weather feels nicer and I can convince my dad to get out on his bike.  Excited for all the bike rides to come this summer.

Style Crush - Rachel Bilson

All photos from http://www.look.co.uk/

Has Rachel Bilson ever worn anything she doesn't look good in? Whether dressed up or down she always looks perfect, not that I'm jealous, no really I'm not! (Grrrr!)

The week's nails...

I loved the pink from last week so much, this week my nails will be pink again! This time I went for white polka dots, but added a smaller black dot into the middle.  I think they kind of look like freaky eyeball nails! To make the white dots I just dotted my nails with the tip of the brush and to make the black ones I used a cocktail stick.  I then used a clear varnish over the top once dry to make a nice shiny finish.

This week I have mostly...

  • Been watching baby sloth videos! OH MY GOSH, these are sooo cute! I start with one YouTube video and it links to more and before you know it an hour has gone by solely watching baby sloths.  I want one, pleeeeeeeeease!

  • Been pinning like crazy onto my Pinterest. I am so addicted! These are some of my recent favourite pins...
          1. From http://www.herecomesthesunblog.com/
          2. From http://www.keikolynn.com/
          3. From http://www.purlbee.com/

  • Been swotting up on photography through A Beautiful Mess.  I love Elsie's blog so much, and the images on it are just fantastic.  I hope to make my blog as eye catching as hers one day, will have to purchase a decent camera first though. Hopefully with my pennies from the new job...
  • Been having fun researching and making Mother's Day crafts.  I can't show pics yet as Mummy might see this, but I will post pics after Mother's Day!
  • Been mourning the loss of Dexter (http://www.sho.com/site/dexter/home.sho#fbid=CGK_G3tp-zB) in my life! We just finished the Season 4 box set and have yet to get Season 5. I was distraught at the ending of Season 4, so a little anxious to see what Season 5 brings. (I get REALLY involved in TV programes, hehe!)

Outdoor Adventures - I Love Biking!

Today we went mountain biking.  We did the Red Route South Loop at Whinlatter and it was mega fun! We hadn't been in a long time, so it was tough going, but the buzz u feel after getting back to the car all covered in mud is so worth it, can't wait until next time!

Painting adventures

I started painting again not so long ago, so I thought I would share a few pics of my first attempts.  It is a teeny tiny painting and is now framed on my living room wall.  I am really happy with it for a first attempt in many years, but I do hope to get a lot better.  The painting is in oil, which is my favourite paint to work with and it is of my parent's house where I grew up.  I hope to share many more painting adventures in future posts...

This week's nails...

This week's nails could not be more girly! They look like cartoon nails!  Anywho, if you would like to know this is how I did it, It is based on Elycia's zig zag nail tutorial which you can find HERE...

You will need 2 colours, I would suggest a lightish base colour and a bold and vibrant top colour.  If you are going to do put the effort in it's good it stands out and you can see the 2 different colours well.
My colours are a white, which is just a french polish tip whitener from Boots, then Models Own in Sophie's Pink and a Barry M all in one topcoat, basecoat and nail hardener.
  • Paint your nails white with 2 coats as normal, wait until completely dry.
  • Get some pinking shears (you know those crafter's scissors with the shaped blades) well I have some scalloped shaped ones so I used these.
  • Get some sellotape and cut out tiny strips with the pinking shears.
  • Place sellotape strips onto nails of first hand, thinking carefully  where the lines will appear and how you want them then ensure tapes are secure and stuck down well.
  • Get your pink and paint the tips with downward strokes towards end of nails.  Go over the edges of the sellotape as well to ensure you have a neat line.
  • Once all first hand has been done pull off the sellotape really fast. There is the danger that it pulls off some nail polish with it, but little bits can be touched up later.
  • I would recommend waiting for this hand to dry completely before embarking on the second hand!
  • Then once both hands beautifully scalloped paint over with 1 coat of clear varnish, this gives them a lovely shiny finish.

This week I have mostly...

  • Been getting back into running. I am beyond happy about this, because I love running.  I started a few years ago and got really into it (which I never thought in a million years I would) but I stopped a while back and each time I have attempted it I have been frustrated by stiff joints and pain down the front of my shins.  But I have done lots of leg exercises and I have started off slow again with reps round the block.  Can't wait for more running next week. (Will blog more about my running journey soon)
  • Been getting my hair cut, see post HERE. So I have been figuring out different ways I can wear it, I'm never very brave with my hair, but I'm determined to be different with this new do.
  • Been crying along to series 9 of One Tree Hill.  Yeah I know I know, so my taste in TV shows is not particularly great, but I couldn't care less, I like what I like and I have been loving OTH since the beginning.  I am so sad this is the last series but if they kill Nathan off I don't quite know what I might do! (and what's with Lucas coming back randomly, and that hair, ICK!) http://www.cwtv.com/shows/one-tree-hill
  • Been LOVING Friends with Benefits, (check out the details and trailer HERE).  I just rented it on DVD this week and I must say it is the best film I have seen so far this year.  Films for me are about escapism so the more girly, slushy and sentimental the better.  This was a very obvious story line but I loved the characters, the setting and the whole feel of this movie. (Justin's very naked body all the way through helped a wee bit too)!

Home Treasures

Have I mentioned how in love with my little loft flat I am? Well I LOVE it loads.  It's the first time I've lived completely on my own and It's sooo nice to be able to have all my belongings spread out and exactly where I want them.  I have been collecting lots of little things for my home for years and all these tiny details add up together to make my flat so perfect to me.  I thought I would share a few little treasures around my flat...

  1. These plants are very old, you simply cannot kill succulents, which is good because I love these little guys like they are pets!
  2. Looking at these teeny jars makes me sooo happy, they are just sooooo cute! I found these at a local craft fayre years ago and if I could remember the name of the lady that makes these I would share a link, I do come across her every now and again but always forget to note down her name! She makes everything out of Fimo, she has little brooches, hair slides, cards, bracelets, ok so they are probably made for kids but they just appeal to me so much.
  3. Why of course Maisy has her own chair!
Hope you enjoyed my photos, it has been fun to share them. x

What am I reading?

What a legend!

The book I am currently reading is Wait for me! by Deborah Devonshire.  She is the youngest and only surviving Mitford sister and the Mitford family are endlessly fascinating to me.  The most famous Mitford is Nancy, she wrote Love in a Cold Climate and The Pursuit of Love, which are two of my absolutely favourite books ever.  They have been made into films and TV series too, which I LOVE! But this book is Deborah, or Debo's (as she is known) memoirs.  She is most famous for marrying the Duke of Devonshire who inherited this...

Chatsworth House
http://www.chatsworth.org/
Which is most famous for being used as Pemberley in the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.

What I am enjoying most about this book, and indeed something that runs through all the Mitfords' books is the theme of sisters.  They are so silly together, have secret languages, pet names for each other, years of inside jokes and anyone who has a sister will appreciate this special bond.  Some of the silly stories she shares make me laugh out loud as they sound so much like my sister and I.

You should certainly buy this book, it is on sale here...

New Hair! wu!

Today I got my hair cut! This was a big event for me because I don't think I have had a hair cut in over a year! Variety of reasons, budgetary constraints, laziness, fear, and the desire for it to be longer for being a bridesmaid (will be blogging LOTS more about bridesmaid stuff this year I'm sure). So yeah, I'm actually happy with it.  There have been way too many occasions in my life of coming out of the hairdressers and wanting to burst into tears. I feel lighter... ah!
